EV1.net Houston Bowl

So, the day finally came that the Horned Frogs were to face the Cyclones from Iowa State. This proved to be quite a game as the Astrodome started to file in, with fans from both teams. The #14 Horned Frogs looked to this game as a statement-maker. The Frogs are now 2-0 against Big XII teams (Oklahoma and Iowa State) this season.

After five minutes had passed in the first quarter, the Frogs seemed to have tamed the Cyclones. TCU started with the ball at the game's beginning, where they drove down the field for eighty yards, when a 20-yard run by Robert Merrill (33) scored the first touchdown of the day for the Frogs. TCU 7 - ISU 0. Less than two minutes later, the great sound of the Froghorn sounded again. Aaron Brown (23) scored from eight yards out, after TCU picked up the ball off of an Iowa State fumble. TCU 14 - ISU 0. Later on down the road, as the first quarter time expires, Jeff Ballard (16) throws an interception which results in a turnover at the TCU 48-yard line. End of the first quarter, TCU 14 - ISU 0.

Fourty-six seconds into the second quarter, Iowa State's Bret Meyer throws a 48-yard touchdown bomb to Todd Blythe (1). TCU 14 - ISU 7. The Frogs' next possession results in a safety, after a bad snap on the punt. The ball is fumbled into the endzone and Brian Cortney (40) picks the ball up and runs out of the endzone. TCU 14 - ISU 9. On the Cyclones' next drive, Bret Meyer takes the ball 63 yards in just over two minutes. Meyer hooks up with Jon Davis for a five yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion is good with a Meyer pass to Ben Barkema. ISU 17 -TCU 14. Then, for Iowa State, Bret Meyer throws an interception to TCU's Zarnell Fitch. The Frogs' next drive results in another Brian Cortney punt. Bret Meyer then runs the ball on the next drive, resulting in a fumble, recovered by David Roach (27). The Frogs then take the field and, on the first play of the current drive, Jeff Ballard completed an 84-yard touchdown pass to Michael DePriest (19). TCU 21 - ISU 17. The next time that the Frogs had the ball, it reulted in a 30-yard field goal by Chris Manfredini (44). At the end of the second quarter, TCU 24 - ISU 17.

More to come... please wait...

UNLV at TCU

The Horned Frogs came into the game against UNLV with one thing motivating them- the very slim chances at a BCS bowl game. After the polls were released, TCU was ranked at #15 across the board, with the BCS rankings still to come. The Frogs decided that they should also pay tribute to LaDainian Tomlinson (ex-TCU star, current San Diego Chargers star) with a breakout win. Tomlinson had gotten to see the Frogs, two weeks ago, in a very close game with the San Diego State Aztecs. Also, with the win here against UNLV, it gives Coach Patterson his third 10-win season with TCU.

Colorado State at TCU

Have you ever heard the expression, "Don't kick the Frog while it's down"? Apparently the Rams haven't either. Last week, the Frogs play a close game with the Aztecs, but the Frogs say "never again". The Frogs brilliantly rout the Rams 33-6, allowing TCU to clinch the Mountain West Conference Championship in their inagural season of league play. The Frogs were expecting a shootout in the "Championship Game", but they got a slightly different result than that which they expected.

The Frogs won the game with their first possession of driving the ball 80 yards in 9 plays, where Jeff Ballard (16) rushed for 3 yards for his eighth rushing touchdown on the season. TCU 7 - CSU 0. CSU then attempts to return the favor by taking the ball 32 yards and kicking a 39-yard field goal (Jason Smith). TCU 7 - CSU 3. Three minutes, thirty-two seconds, and a 83 yards later TCU tacks on another touchdown with an Aaron Brown (23) 10-yard run, only his second rushing touchdown all season. On the next drive, Colorado State looks to be on their way to a touchdown, only to throw their first of four INTs. This one to Brian Bonner (6) who takes it back 29 yards to the CSU 35-yard line. Unfortunatly for the Frogs, they are unable to produce anything on the following drive and miss a long 47-yard FG attempt (Peter LoCoco). At the end of one, TCU 14 - Colorado State 3.

Going into the second quarter, the Frogs had given up the ball. The Horned Frogs hold the Rams to three-and-out, only to muff the punt and give the ball back. The Rams travel farther down field, but are held to three points by the Frogs unbending defence. TCU 14 - CSU 6. The Frogs charge back 75 yards for a 18-yard touchdown pass from Ballard to Cory Rodgers (17). TCU 21 - CSU 6. After this touchdown by the Frogs, we see a punt from the Rams, a punt from the Frogs, and a punt... no wait, my bad. Another TCU interception! Bonner intercepts another pass from Justin Holland, this one on the first play. TCU then drives another 42 yards and takes a chip-shot with Chris Manfredini (26-yard FG) and it's good. TCU would then lead 24-6 going into the locker room for the halftime break. TCU 24 - Colorado State 6.

After the halftime break, as always, the fans are anxious to see which teams show up for the second half of the games. Apparently, the "Ewes" didn't show up to play this past Saturday night. On their first drive of the second half, the Rams traveled only 19 yards before Holland forgets that his guys aren't wearing purple. TCU's Marvin White (26) makes his first interception of the night with 12:39 left in the third quarter. Although TCU is forced to punt their next time out, TCU pins the Rams at their own 7-yard line. Five seconds later, TCU's Brian Bonner (6) and Chase Ortiz (#) meet Mr. Holland in the endzone for a safety. TCU 26 - CSU 6. TCU then recieves the free kick, following the safety, and Rodgers makes a 30-yard return into the Rams' territory. Not even two minutes later, Cory Rodgers runs the ball 6 yards to meet the endzone one more time this season. On the Frogs' next drive, it's fourth-and-one as the Frogs run up the middle for no gain, turning the ball over. Colorado State fights back and looks good going into the fourth quarter of play. TCU 33 - CSU 6.

As Colorado State drives deep into the heart of the Frogs, they have a fourth-and-goal from the TCU 8. Holland drops back in the pocket, passes into the endzone AND IT'S PICKED OFF AGAIN! Eric Buchanon (25) makes his first pick of the day, fourth overall interception for the Rams on the day. Nothing comes for the next few drives, leading to punt, after punt, after punt. Then, the Rams start driving down the field once again and get to the Frogs 11 yard line. On fourth down and goal, Holland fires the pass into the endzone, incomplete. The Frogs run three plays and that's that. TCU 33 - CSU 6.

The 2005 TCU Horned Frogs win the Mountain West Conference Championship in their inagural season of play. Great job to the Horned Frogs. Now go get those Rebels!

Go Frogs!

TCU was at a dis-advantage going into the game. The starting quarterback, Tye Gunn (15), for the Frogs was going to miss the game, as well as the starting running back, Lonta Hobbs (30). Gunn had gone out last week, against the Cougars, after running the ball up the middle for a first down in the third quarter. Jeff Ballard (16) replaced Gunn for the day and Hobbs was replaced by Robert Merrill (33) and Aaron Brown (23).
At the end of the first, TCU 14 - CSU 3

This, however, did not seem to slow down the Frogs offence one bit. The Frog's first defensive play was a 41-yard interception return by Quintly Butler (4) to get inside the 10-yard line. This then led to TCU's first offensive play to be an 8-yard touchdown run by Robert Merrill (33). TCU then held the Lobos 4-and-out and forced a punt. Then vice-versa. UNM's next drive struck some deja vu for the fans. Kole McKamey's second interception of the day, picked off by Jeremy Modkins (28), leading to Jeff Ballard's first of four rushing touchdowns of the day. All this in less than two minutes.

Later, still in the first quarter, the Frogs turned the ball over on downs. Dontrell Moore (#), the UNM running back, went 49 yards on the ground, but fumbled the ball and was picked up by Drew Coleman (11) of TCU. TCU took it back 69-yards and punched it in with a 4-yard run, again by Jeff Ballard, his second rushing touchdown of the night. TCU then kicked it off and held UNM back deep in their own territory. The Frogs then got the ball back on the UNM 29-yard line, after a short punt and good return. Ballard hooked up with Michael DePriest (19) for a 29-yard touchdown pass. At the end of the first quarter, TCU 28 - UNM 0.

Utah at TCU

Well, you saw the game, 'nuff said. TCU went into this game, ready to play after shocking the college football level for two weeks in a row. Well- they did it one more time. The Frogs came to play and definatly brought their "A-Game" to this one.

Common question of the night: Who's Aaron Brown?
Aaron Brown is a freshmen running back for the Frogs, who ran 17 times tonight for a total of 163 yards. Remind you of a few people? Let me help you out- LaDanian Tomlinson (5), Lonta Hobbs (30), and Robert Merrill (33). Aaron Brown will be a definate threat for the Heisman race, if he can keep this route going.

Game Recap:
Utah came in rather well prepared. They managed to score within the first 8 minutes of the game, keeping Ganther on the ground, allowing the Utes to gain the momentum. The Frogs looked to be in for a long night, then TCU's Marvin White (26) managed to come up with a 12 yard interception, which made something miraculous happened. The night got shorter... and shorter... and shorter. The offense came out to play. The defense came out to play. TCU came out to play.

The Frogs defense stood up and helped the cause as they continued to stand strong. Aaron Brown helped to move the ball downfield and Robert Merrill pops it in for a 3-yard run to get the ball game tied up. Later in the second quarter, Utah gets a short field where they move the ball 32 yards and kick a field goal (by Beardall) to take the lead going into the half.

After the halftime break however, Utah didn't even allow five minutes to pass before they punched it in with a 1-yard run (Johnson), this being the last of Utah's scores until overtime. However on TCU's next drive, they answered with a touchdown of their own, another one by Robert Merrill. 6 minutes later, the kick is up and it's good. And with that, Manfredini ties the game up, 17-17.

The fourth quarter went by with no real change, which led the game into overtime. TCU won the toss, chose to play defense and held the Utes to a 4th and short, leading them to kick the 34-yard field goal with Beardall.

TCU then took the field and started back up the running game. They successfully moved the ball 21 yards to the 4 yard line when... TOUCHDOWN Horned Frogs! A 4-yard pass from Tye Gunn to Michael DePriest, which was DePriest's second catch of the day.

TCU at SMU
TCU travels into Dallas for what seemed like an easy win. However, the Frogs looked as though they were overly-confident after their OU upset.

The Horned Frogs shot four field goals with Peter LoCoco (13) and missed all but the second one, which brought TCU a total of 3 first half points. Late in the second quarter, SMU went to their running back for two touchdowns that took the Mustangs into the half with a 14-3 lead on the Frogs.

After the halftime break, TCU shot right back on the kick return, by Cory Rodgers (17), which gave the illusion that the Frogs were going to make a comeback. Eleven seconds is the ammount of time that it took for Rodgers to return it 86 yards for the Frogs first, and only, touchdown of the night. The Mustangs managed to yet again find their running back for another touchdown.

Despite the several comebacks that the Horned Frogs seemed to have late in the game, it didn't help the final score improve at all. TCU lost the game 21-10 to SMU. Coach Patterson had warned that he thought that his team would shock the college football world a second time, unfortunatly- he was right.

TCU at OU
The Horned Frogs showed up to play when they went to Norman to face off against the Sooners of Oklahoma. They went into the halftime break with a 10-0 lead, thanks to the help of the touchdown pass from Tye Gunn (15) to Derek Moore (13) and the field goal from Peter LoCoco late in the second quarter.

In the 3rd Quarter, Oklahoma came back and played their running game, which led to the Sooners bringing the game to an even 10-10. Oklahoma Sophmore, Adrian Petersen (28), was in and out of the game with an injured right ankle.

Later, in the 4th quarter, TCU brought the run with Robert Merrill (33) and caught up with the endzone once again. This bringing the game to another TCU lead, this time 17-10. The Frogs held on and beat the Sooners 17-10 thanks to an amazing run defense, which had held Peterson to a mere 5 yards in the first half of the game.
